Roaming,
it alludes to budget traveling, wandering, walking/biking/driving into the vast expanse with vague plans or expectations.
It's involves jumping-off points and maybe a few must-dos.
Most of all I believe it involves putting yourself in others' shoes, constantly questioning society, and taking the time to understand the history of a place so that you can act accordingly.
It means stepping outside of the box and seeing what's really out there, the French cityscape version being "dérive."
And then taking it one step further...internalizing it and using what you've discovered to leave your own positive impression upon a place so that it's continuously better for others visiting and those who associate it with identity, home.

What's the purpose of roaming time and time again if there's no underlying aim, no contribution to the greater good? I'll tell you from experience it's quite the empty existence.
My writings here aren't a tell-all or a rigid guide to exactly where, when, and how roaming should be done. That goes against the very definition. It's simply a collection of jumping-off points to serve as states-of-mind to start with or mediums to bounce your own thoughts off of.
